On September 2, 1963 Pete Rose hit a VERY RARE Home Run. That kind of home run is so rare that it has only been done one time since then. What kind of home run was it?

barkeep, I admit I tried to look this one up. I did not find anything unusual about the game. It was actually a double header against the Mets at the Polo Grounds. I'm not sure when Rose hit the homer, but I know it was in the second game. Was it his first at bat? I sure miss double headers.
Also, in looking at the Reds schedule that year, they opened the season with one game against the Pirates, then played the next three in Philly, then back to Pittsburgh.
A one game opener series?

Ken. Rose hit a home run on the first pitch of the game. Did you notice the final score of the game?

Ken. The Cincinnati Reds have a tradition of playing the first game of the Baseball season. So they moved the game up one day because there was one game scheduled that day In The American League. Baseball opening day was the next day and the Pirates were the only team available that day I guess.

Ken. I don't know if that is what happened. I looked at the Baseball schedule for that week and I am guessing that is what happened.

Yes, it was 1-0. Rose got 2 out of the 4 hits. Did you also notice that both starters completed the game? Maloney vs Hook.
I think you must be right on the opening day thing. It's like the made the series schedules first, then popped the Reds on it one day earlier. Plus Philly and Pittsburgh is a quick day trip if on a bus.

1-0 Game where the first pitch of the game is a home run and then no more scoring in the game. Very Very Rare! And I know games where both pitchers pitch the entire game. Back in 1973 the first year of the DH in the AL that happened in low scoring games. No pitch count then and no need to take the pitcher out for a pinch hitter. I was at a double header that year where the Yankees used two pitchers for the entire double header and the Tigers used three.
