Is that the answer? I would have been wrong as I would have guessed Harvey Haddix - who had a "perfect game" for 12 innings and lost.

Yes JR, it was Mussina. He flirted several times with perfection, but I remember him losing one to the Red Sox. I can't think of the other one.
A "could be" Hall of Famer, but his stats run just short. I always wanted the Reds to trade for him.

Yes. Mike Mussina. They called him, The Almost Pitcher. He got the first 26 Red Sox batters out and then went 0 and 2 on the 27th hitter that was in a slump. He still won 1-0.
