I bought the book, Brenda, and also like the notes at the end of each episode. I haven't yet taken the time to read the whole thing, just parts of each chapter. I did notice he gave Kitty's real name as Katherine instead of Kathleen. I had read that somewhere else, but can't remember where. We all know though that she gave her real name in the episode Arizona Midnight. Overall, I like what I see in the book. Maybe this winter, I will sit down and read the book.

Janie, Katherine was Kitty's real name in the radio show. I don't remember which episode (our radio experts can tell us), but I remember being struck by it when I heard. Doc was Charles on the radio & not Galen & of course Chester's last name was Proudfoot. There were other differences among the episodes that were aired on both radio & TV.
Mike: The book is mentioned in another thread on the board titled CBS and Gunsmoke. Several people commented on it there. Lots of good stuff in the book and definitely worth the price in my opinion. There are 3 good interviews in the book that were taken some time ago by Jeremy Slate, Peggy Rea and Morgan Woodward. All had interesting things to say not only about Gunsmoke but other shows and performers they had worked with during their long careers. The book also talked about the actors who made up the citizens of Dodge, has an episode guide different from the Barabas book and a 3 part index guide featuring Gunsmoke episodes, television shows, films & plays, and an index of names. Very good book about Gunsmoke and other things connected with Gunsmoke.
Just started to read this and was curious if anyone else noticed that the author said AB was married 5 times. I thought she had only been married 4 times. I'm always leery of biographical information since it doesn't come straight from the source but I know it wasn't possible for the author to interview most of the major people involved.
I looked Amanda's marriages up on both Wikipedia and IMDb and both those sources say she was married 4 times and both sources agree on the ex husband's names. Here is the information both of them supplied:
Don Whitman 1954-56 Jason Day 1964-67 Frank Gilbert 1967-82 Mark Spaeth 1984-85
I thought she had been married 5 times. Misskittyfan, what source did you see that listed Jack Shea as her first husband?
I found a Kansas City newspaper dtd 8/16/64 announcing her marriage to Jason Day which stated her first 2 husbands were Jack Shea and Don Whitman. I also found 4 sources which indicated she may have married Jack Shea but none of them were able to find the date of marriage or divorce. 2 of those did not actually list him as being married to her but said she had been married 4 times to the men listed by Wikipedia and IMDb.
I found Jack Shea's bio on IMDb and it states Jack Shea was married only once to Patt Shea from 1954 to his death in 2013 and they had 5 children. There is confusion as to him ever being married to Amanda Blake. Perhaps someone on the board may have more information on this and can clear this question up as to her being married 4 times or 5 times. Shea was a big time television director who directed tv shows such as All In the Family, The Jeffersons, Designing Women, Bob Hope Show, Gloria, etc. On one site Lady G wrote in asking if Amanda was ever married to Jack Shea. That was in 2012. Right now, I would say there is great confusion about her ever being married to Jack Shea. So I would say until we have more to go on such as date of marriage she officially had been married 4 times.
I have read the information that Becky gave on the first marriage to Jack Shea. It appears that Amanda may not have been involved with the director Jack Shea because she lists Jack Shea as an older man and also an actor. IMDb also lists an actor by the name of Jack Shea who was born in 1913 and died in 1972. There is not much information on this actor as it looks like he was in 3 or 4 movies between 1948 and 1952. His last movie was in 1952 called Zombies of the Stratosphere. I think this is the man Amanda Blake would have been involved with. Becky says the marriage occurred in 1952, her first, and admitted that details of the nuptials are nominal at best other than a report that the couple eloped to Las Vegas shortly after Amanda completed her work on the movie Lili, which was filmed at MGM. This article or report said the honeymoon was cut short as Amanda was called back to the studio to reshoot her few scenes in that movie that starred Leslie Caron. Becky quotes Amanda admitting that the marriage was "to get away from home really, I was such a baby, and wasn't that a stupid thing to do? A terrible thing for my mother and father, a terrible thing for the guy I married and terrible for me. I fitted in and out of that one pretty fast...I had poor judgement." I am thinking that marriage may have been annulled since there is such confusion elsewhere on this. I am thinking there is probably enough information found to indicate that Amanda was married 5 times and that Amanda's first husband may have been the actor Jack Shea. It also could be that since the marriage was so short that a divorce may have been filed, but Amanda just later on didn't list it as a marriage at all. If anyone has any more information on this please weigh in. There is also the possibility that they went to Vegas to get married and changed their minds once there. If that happened then she was married 4 times.
