I hope everyone is well and having a good Spring. I wanted to share these photos I came across a while back of Jim Arness surfing in 1961. They come from the Surfing Heritage Foundation website. I thought you all would enjoy them.

Thanks, Violette. I only wish there was a way to get a close up. I know from his autobio that he was a surfer bum when he first came to Hollywood but kept up the sport even after GS and that his son was a championship surfer.
I have thought about asking his wife if he was actually left handed but was raised to write with his right hand. Apart from him shooting right handed, and writing right handed in Gunsmoke, most of the time he uses his left hand, and I also noticed his South Paw stance on the surf board.
You are observant Lady G. It could be just a natural thing with JA. In baseball, there are players who throw right and bat left handed and vice versa. May have been the same with JA in regards to his writing and surfing.
Whoops. Made a bad mistake. I meant to address Dotty and not Lady G. Please excuse me. You are very observant Dotty. I might add something to the above. In baseball there are also switch hitters who can bat both left handed and right handed pretty good. The most famous of these was probably Mickey Mantle who was good from both sides. Lance Berkman who is currently playing with St.Louis is another one.
Sure appreciate the vast knowledge many of you have about JA ...just wondered how many of you knew him personally...it must have been great to be able to see him in person, book signings, annual fan gatherings....appreciate your sharing on this one...thanks Senny
In the face, Rolf looks just like his Dad. Thanks for that awesome pic, ladyg
JA was quite the outdoors sportsman. Surfing and snow skiing. Must be what contributed to his slightly weathered face. Not that I'm complaining, I love it. JA always had that look of someone that spent many hours in the sun and wind. Especially noticeable in the later episodes. Made him even sexier, imo.
Thanks for those wonderful surfing pics, Violette.
